WHAT IS CHILDSMILE?
Childsmile is a national programme designed to improve the oral health of children in Scotland, and reduce inequalities, both in dental health and access to dental services. At KW Dental, we are committed to working with the Childsmile program to help you keep your child's teeth healthy and stop them suffering tooth decay in the future. Our head dental nurse, Clare, will be be taking a course later in the year to become an extended duty dental nurse, to train in oral health promotion and fluoride varnish application to support our team in providing Childsmile care.
CHILDSMILE AT THE DENTIST
It is recommended that you should register your baby with a dentist soon after birth or by the time they are six months of age. From then on, take your child to see the dentist every six months. Taking your baby to the dental practice as early as possible helps them to get used to the sights, sounds and smells of a dental practice and give you access to information, advice and support for looking after your child's teeth.
At KW Dental, we aim to deliver the best treatment possible, in a child-friendly atmosphere! When you bring your child in for their appointment, you will be given advice and support from our team, and we will show you how you can help your child keep healthy teeth and stop them suffering tooth decay.
Our team will:
give information on how teeth grow and develop and carry out regular checks to make sure the teeth and gums are healthy
offer hints and tips on dental care
demonstrate and explain toothbrushing
promote toothbrushing messages e.g. spit don’t rinse
advise on weaning and healthy snacks and drinks
provide clinical care including twice yearly fluoride varnish
Fissure sealants are plastic coatings that are painted on to the grooves of the back teeth. The sealant forms a protective layer that keeps food and bacteria from getting stuck in the tiny grooves in the teeth and causing decay. Resin-based fissure sealants should be applied to the permanent molars of all children as early after eruption as possible.
